March 13Raleigh, NC
SAFEchild, the only Wake County nonprofit organization to offer a full range of child abuse prevention and intervention services at no cost, has raised $11.1 million in just two years for its new 20,000-square-foot facility at 2841 Kidd Road in Raleigh, surpassing its $11 million goal and providing immediate benefit to the community.

As soon as staff moved into the building in October 2023, they immediately went to work expanding programs:

  • The SAFEchild Advocacy Center is now providing comprehensive intervention services to 45 child victims of abuse each month, up from 30 before the move, while the wait time for an appointment at the SAC is now two weeks, down from six weeks (with a short-term goal of less than five days).
  • SAFEchild now offers 15 parent education and support groups each week, most of them at the new facility, up from six. This means that 150 caregivers and 200 children receive guidance and nurturing every week.
  • The number of SAFEchild volunteers has increased to 164 from 100.

“As Wake County continues to grow, so does the need for supportive family services,” said Cristin DeRonja, SAFEchild’s executive director. “We are thrilled to share our new home with our community and multiply the number of children and families we serve.”

SAFEchild, which opened in 1992, funded the new building through its Champion Our Children capital campaign, raising $11.105 million in just two years from 425 donors. Major donors include:

  • WakeMed Health & Hospitals donated 3.5 acres of land valued at about $1 million for the new SAFEchild building.
  • Wake County contributed $2 million.
  • The City of Raleigh and Kim & Fielding Miller Family Foundation each contributed $1 million.
  • AJ Fletcher Foundation, the State Employees’ Credit Union Foundation, Fred and Annette Anderson and Family, and the Temple Sloan Family Foundation each contributed $500,000.
